The Evolution of Chinese Schools Post-Pandemic: A Journey of Innovation and Community Empowerment
In 2023, after years of challenges brought on by the pandemic, the growth of Chinese schools faced significant obstacles. To tackle issues such as declining enrollment and operational difficulties, the Grand Rapids Chinese School, supported by the West Michigan Chinese Association, BoardX, and CreateX, successfully organized a Design Thinking and Innovation Workshop. This initiative aimed to equip Chinese schools with innovative solutions for a sustainable future.
Background and Challenges of Chinese Schools
The pandemic created unprecedented challenges for Chinese schools. With more students turning to alternative channels for Chinese language education, enrollment numbers dropped, threatening the operational sustainability of many schools. Faced with these challenges, the workshop became a platform to brainstorm and identify feasible paths forward.
CreateX's Mission and Vision
CreateX is dedicated to solving community challenges by organizing innovation workshops. Its mission extends beyond problem-solving—CreateX aspires to foster a culture of design thinking and encourage broader community participation in innovation. By solving real-world challenges, CreateX aims to help participants understand the principles of innovation, empowering them to drive creative problem-solving in their communities.
Objectives of the Innovation Workshop
The workshop had four primary goals:
- Understand the Current Situation
Engage with teachers, parents, students, and other stakeholders to gain a deep understanding of the challenges facing Chinese schools. - Encourage Collective Brainstorming
Bring together diverse community stakeholders to discuss the future strategies for Chinese schools. - Discover Solutions
Use design thinking tools to explore innovative solutions to the current challenges. - Promote Community Innovation
Inspire community involvement in innovation, enhancing the appeal and competitiveness of Chinese schools.
Design Thinking: A Human-Centered Approach to Innovation
Design thinking is a human-centered innovation methodology aimed at solving complex problems through empathy and iterative processes. Initially developed for product design, it is now widely applied across sectors, including community development. Design thinking focuses on identifying root causes through deep user research and generating creative solutions through stakeholder collaboration.
Workshop Implementation
The week-long workshop brought together 20 team members from CreateX, conducting interviews with 25 groups of stakeholders, including parents, students, teachers, and neighboring schools. This collaborative effort uncovered valuable insights into the current struggles and potential solutions for Chinese schools. CreateX, in partnership with BoardX, provided the platform and resources for the workshop’s success.
Community Support
The workshop received strong endorsements from key leaders in the Chinese school and the West Michigan Chinese Association:
"I deeply appreciate CreateX and BoardX's support in helping Chinese schools think out of the box from traditional mindsets and embrace innovation. With challenges like enrollment and student interest persisting, this workshop allowed us to visualize our problems on the BoardX platform and identify actionable improvements."
